Emergency Contraception - NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY

If you have had unprotected sex, that is, sex without using contraception, or think your contraception might

have failed, you can use emergency contraception.

What Emergency Contraception can I get from the Pharmacy?

Here at The Village Pharmacy, we supply Levonelle® One Step. This medication has been available since 2004

and is the only morning after pill available to purchase from pharmacies. Levonelle® One Step can be taken

up to three days (72 hours) after unprotected sexual intercourse or a contraception mishap.

Levonelle One Step:

• contains 1.5mg levonorgestrel
• is a one tablet dose

(One tablet should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours after unprotected sex.)

How does it work?

Levonelle is thought to work in one of two ways:

•    Preventing ovulation and fertilisation at the preovulatory phase
•    Causing changes to the endometrium which discourages implantation.

However, it is not effective once the process of implantation has begun.

How much does it cost?

There is a fee of around £25 to use this service.

Will it be suitable for me?

The pharmacist may not be able to sell it to you, for example if:

•     it has been more than 72 hours since you had unprotected sex
•     you have had unprotected sex more than once in the menstrual cycle
•     you think that you might already be pregnant
•     you are taking certain prescribed or complementary medicines
•     you have certain health conditions
